Where the Charleston dinner cruise boards at Patriots Point, how to park and find the ticket window, what to wear, and when the sun sets during the sailing.
Reserve a table on the dinner cruise ↗Quick answer
The dinner cruise boards at Patriots Point, 40 Patriots Point Road in Mount Pleasant, from 6:30 pm and sails from 7:00 to 9:30 pm. Allow time to park, collect your boarding pass at the ticket window and dress resort casual, with flat shoes and a light jacket. From mid-March to early October the sun sets after the boat leaves, so those dates give you sunset light during the sailing.

Where the boat leaves
The dinner cruise leaves from Patriots Point, 40 Patriots Point Road, Mount Pleasant, on the east side of the harbor. Patriots Point is a naval and maritime museum at the mouth of the Cooper River, across from Charleston, and its centerpiece is the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown. The operator also has a downtown dock at Aquarium Wharf, but the dinner cruise does not leave from there. Make sure the address in your phone is Patriots Point, not the downtown waterfront. The museum also holds the destroyer USS Laffey, and a Medal of Honor museum aboard the carrier reopened in 2024.
Driving and parking
Take US 17 and cross the Ravenel Bridge from downtown into Mount Pleasant. Parking at Patriots Point is run by Palmetto Parking, not by the cruise operator or the museum. Payment is by credit or debit card only, and the operator says parking fees are not refunded if a cruise is cancelled. Some guests say the lot has no attendants in the evening and call the fee steep for a few hours. Allow time to park before you walk to the dock, and keep the card you used handy, since it is also the way to pay for drinks on board.
- After the bridge, merge right onto Coleman Boulevard
- Turn right at the first traffic light onto Patriots Point Road
- Continue through the roundabout, past the old entrance
- Turn right onto Club House Road; the visitor lot is on your right
Getting there without a car
Patriots Point says Charleston Water Taxi serves the museum seasonally, and the water taxi's site lists Patriots Point among its stops. Check the schedule for your date, and check the last departure back against the cruise's return, because the sailing ends at 9:30 pm. A taxi or ride-hail car can take you to the same Patriots Point Road address. If you rely on one for the return, sort out the pickup before you board, while there is still time to walk to the entrance.
Boarding pass and the ticket window
You collect a boarding pass at the ticket window before you board. Boarding begins at 6:30 pm and the boat sails at 7:00 pm, so aim to be at the dock before boarding opens rather than at the last minute. Some guests say the way to the ticket window is not obvious. Bags are searched before boarding, concealed weapons and strollers are not allowed, and the operator does not let anyone board who arrives intoxicated. Cards are accepted on board; Apple Pay is not.
What to wear
The dress code is resort casual: neat, relaxed clothes, no need for a jacket and tie. The operator suggests flat or low-heeled shoes for the boat and a light jacket in the cooler months, because it can be breezy on the water. The two dining decks are enclosed and air-conditioned, so a wrap is useful even in summer. The upper observation deck is open air. If you plan to go up there for the bridge or the skyline, bring something for the wind.
When the sun sets during the sailing
The operator's schedule for the dinner cruise is 7:00 to 9:30 pm. Sunset in Charleston moves from about 5:20 pm in November and December to about 8:30 pm in June and July, so the light changes a great deal. In 2026 the sun sets after 7:00 pm from mid-March through the first days of October, which puts the sunset inside the sailing. After that the cruise starts at or after dusk. The table shows sunset on the 15th of selected months, in local clock time.
Heat, storms and hurricane season
Charleston has a humid subtropical climate. Summer afternoons are hot, July highs average around 88 to 91 degrees Fahrenheit, and thunderstorms bring a large share of the year's rain: almost half of it falls between June and September. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November and peaks around 10 September. The operator says dinner cruises sail rain or shine. Guests describe a rainy evening when the upper deck was closed to them but the staff and the dinner made up for it.
Cold months
Winter is mild but not warm. January highs average roughly 58 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit and lows of roughly 39 to 44 degrees, and the wind off the water makes it feel colder. The dining decks stay climate controlled, so dinner itself is comfortable. The open deck is where a coat matters, along with gloves if you plan to stand there for the skyline. Winter sailings are entirely after dark, which suits the lit bridge and the city lights. In these months the dinner cruise is a night cruise, because sunset comes well before boarding.
While you wait at the dock
From Patriots Point you look across the water to the Ravenel Bridge, which carries US 17 over the Cooper River. It is 13,200 feet long, and the cruise sails beneath it. Tours that land at Fort Sumter also leave from Patriots Point, but that is a separate ticket, and the dinner cruise only passes the fort. The museum on the same waterfront is open from 10 am to 5 pm, which is before the cruise boards, so a visit to the carrier means arriving earlier in the day or another day.
On board: where to be for the view
The Spirit of Carolina has two enclosed dining decks and an open-air observation deck, and dinner is served inside. For the view, go up to the observation deck between courses, when the boat is passing the bridge, the fort or the Battery. One guest seated at the back found the live music a little hard to hear, so the deck is also a place to listen from. Guests who took a drink up there report that staff would not let a martini stay on deck, so finish it first, and carry only your phone when you climb.
Who this isn't for
This is not a good fit if you need step-free boarding: the operator says accessibility is very limited and steps are required. It is also a poor fit for anyone who plans to arrive by public transport with no way back after 9:30 pm, for anyone who wants to bring their own wine or music, and for families who need a stroller on board. Nor is it a daytime cruise. If you want sun on the water, the downtown harbor cruises run earlier.
Frequently asked questions
What time should I arrive for the dinner cruise?
Arrive before 6:30 pm, when boarding begins; the boat sails at 7:00 pm. That leaves time to park, collect your boarding pass at the ticket window and walk to the dock.
Is parking free at Patriots Point?
No. Parking is run by Palmetto Parking, takes credit or debit cards only, and is charged on top of the cruise. The operator does not refund parking fees if a cruise is cancelled.
What is the dress code?
Resort casual. The operator suggests flat or low-heeled shoes, and a light jacket in the cooler months because it can be breezy on the water. The dining decks are climate controlled.
Does the dinner cruise leave from downtown Charleston?
No. It leaves from Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant, across the harbor. The operator's downtown dock at Aquarium Wharf is used for its harbor tours, not for the dinner cruise.
Will I see the sunset?
From about mid-March to early October, yes: the sun sets after the 7:00 pm departure. From late October the whole sailing is after dark, so you see the lit city and bridge instead.
What if it rains?
The cruise sails rain or shine, according to the operator. The dining decks are enclosed, so dinner goes ahead indoors, but the open upper deck may be unusable in heavy rain.
